Overview
Mean Arterial Pressure (MAP) represents the average arterial pressure throughout the cardiac cycle. It is the primary determinant of tissue perfusion pressure and a key resuscitation target in shock.

MAP Interpretation
| MAP Range | Interpretation | Clinical Significance |
|---|---|---|
| <60 mmHg | Critical | Organ hypoperfusion, urgent intervention |
| 60–70 mmHg | Low | Close monitoring, consider fluids/vasopressors |
| 70–100 mmHg | Normal | Adequate organ perfusion |
| >100 mmHg | Elevated | Hypertensive — evaluate for end-organ damage |

= (SBP + 2 × DBP) / 3
Pulse Pressure = SBP - DBP

Clinical Notes:
• Target MAP ≥65 mmHg in septic shock (Surviving Sepsis Campaign guideline)
• Higher MAP targets (≥80 mmHg) may be needed in chronic hypertension or CNS injury
• Wide PP (>60): aortic regurgitation, hyperthyroidism, severe anemia
• Narrow PP (<25): cardiac tamponade, severe heart failure, hypovolemia
• Target MAP ≥65 mmHg in septic shock (Surviving Sepsis Campaign guideline)
