The Nadler formula estimates total blood volume based on height, weight, and sex. This is useful for perioperative planning, transfusion management, and calculating allowable blood loss. Red cell mass and plasma volume are derived from blood volume and hematocrit.

Clinical Notes
The Nadler equation (1962) is the most widely validated method for estimating blood volume. Simple estimates (70 mL/kg male, 65 mL/kg female) are useful for rapid bedside calculations. Blood volume estimation guides perioperative transfusion triggers, autologous blood donation planning, and allowable blood loss calculation (ABL = EBV × [(starting Hct − minimum acceptable Hct) / starting Hct]).
